Statistics

The Maritime Authority of the Velocity Interoperability Network publishes statistics on the fleet entered on the Vessel Register, on vessel movements in the Northgate Channel, on the aids to navigation it maintains, and on surveys, inspections and incidents. This first release covers the transition period from 10 August to 5 September 2026, during which member organisations transferred their vessel lists and harbour functions to the Authority, and records the position at establishment on 6 September 2026.

The figures are drawn from the lists supplied by member organisations, from the harbour office log kept under the interim arrangements, and from the Authority's survey and inspection records. Figures for the transition period are provisional and will be revised in later releases where late returns are received. Figures for the fleet will change as provisional entries are confirmed or lapse.

The position at establishment. The figures below record the Authority at the point of establishment.

The fleet by class. The 1,284 vessels carried onto the Register as provisional entries are classified below according to the fee classes set on 6 September 2026. Classification of the transferred lists was made from the particulars recorded by member organisations and will be corrected on confirmation where an owner shows that a vessel falls into a different class.

Pleasure craft account for seven vessels in ten. The 64 vessels in classes E and F carry passengers, cargo and fuel between the sites of the Network and are surveyed annually; their applications are given priority so that services are not interrupted while the Register is established.

Activity during the transition. The harbour office at Southbank was staffed under interim arrangements from 10 August 2026. The activity recorded is shown below.

Of the 11 incidents reported, six were groundings on the Eastfield Shoal or its approaches while the shoal beacon was extinguished, three were collisions between moored vessels in Southbank Harbour during the gale of 19 August, and two were engine failures requiring a tow. None involved injury. The relighting of the Eastfield Shoal beacon on 4 September is recorded in Notice 4 of 2026.

Aids to navigation. The 67 aids in service at establishment are shown by type and area below. The four temporary cable route marks laid for the works in Westbrook Roads are included under buoys.

Capacity from September 2026. The figures below record the capacity the Authority has established for its first months of operation.

The Authority will publish statistics quarterly. The next release, covering the quarter ending 30 September 2026, will be published in October 2026 and announced in the Newsroom. It will include the number of provisional entries confirmed, the first month of movements under the Northgate Channel traffic scheme and fixed penalties issued.
